The UK Safer Internet Programme
The UK Safer Internet Programme (UKSIP) consortium officially formed in July 2009. The Consortium consists of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) which has a strong history as the UK awareness node, having coordinated activities in this role locally, nationally and internationally since 2007; the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) and ChildLine from the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) are also uniquely placed to provide hotline and helpline functions as the agencies with national mandates in this area.
Robust partnership working between all three organisations bolsters responses across all areas, including law enforcement and reporting functions through shared intelligence, and awareness and education campaigns through shared knowledge, expertise and resources. CEOP has been designated by the UK Council for Child Internet Safety (UKCCIS) as the ‘one stop shop’ for the British public to gain advice, support and report any concerns they have and as such is the definitive agency dealing with this issue nationally.
UK Awareness Node: CEOP www.ceop.police.uk
Launched in April 2006, CEOP is a Government run law enforcement agency aiming to protect young people from sexual abuse. CEOP is a multi agency organisation uniting police, charities and industry, to work together in a holistic approach. Thinkuknow is CEOP’s education initiative aimed at empowering young people through information and education. Through an extensive range of dynamic resources, young people are equipped with the knowledge to identify the risks posed to them online and given proactive responses to reduce these risks. There are resources available for young people aged 4 – 16 years, parents & carers and professionals who work with young people. All Thinkuknow resources are free of charge. All CEOP education resources are created using the latest intelligence and case studies from the CEOP intelligence and operations faculties, as well as consultation with CEOP’s multi agency Education Advisory Board and Youth Advisory Panel. Many of the resources have been developed with lesson plans which map to the National Curriculum. These are also available with guidance notes for professionals outside of the classroom. For further information about CEOP’s Thinkuknow education initiative visit: www.thinkuknow.co.uk
UK Hotline: IWF www.iwf.org.uk
IWF operates the UK Hotline for reporting and removing illegal online content specifically, child sexual abuse images hosted anywhere in the world and criminally obscene and incitement to racial hatred content hosted in the UK. IWF is an independent self-regulatory body, funded by the EU and the wider online sector and we work in partnership with industry, law enforcement, government, the education sector, charities, international partners and the public. As a result of this approach, illegal content within our remit has been virtually eradicated from UK networks. IWF strives to create continued awareness of the role and purpose of the IWF and aim to foster trust and reassurance in the internet for current and future users. IWF is a member of INHOPE.For more information about IWF visit: http://www.iwf.org.uk/public/page.103.htm
UK Helpline: ChildLine www.childline.org.uk 0800 11 11
The NSPCC’s mission is to end cruelty to children. Their vision is a society in which all children are loved, valued and able to fulfill their potential.  They believe that children need to be able to talk freely about their problems and get advice, information and guidance from a safe source.  Since its launch in 1986 NSPCC’s ChildLine has been providing children in the UK with this service, saving lives and bringing hope to thousands of children who believed nobody else cared for them. ChildLine is the UK’s free, confidential helpline for children and young people. Trained counselors are on hand 24 hours a day to provide advice and support by phone and online.
