What is Hector’s World®?

Hector’s World® is a visually stunning and effective digital citizenship education programme for children aged 2-9 years and their families. This free online learning resource has been developed by Hector’s World® Limited (“HWL”), a New Zealand charity and a social entrepreneurship venture, with the animation being carried out by Auckland’s Inkspot Digital Limited.  HWL is a separate subsidiary of NetSafe Incorporated, a non-profit organization that educates all New Zealanders about safe and responsible use of ICT.  Hector’s World was initiated as a project by NetSafe in 2003 and continued there until 2005, when HWL was established.

The Hector's World resource features Hector and his friends who live in the magical animated world of Silicon Deep where their whole community is learning about the digital world. Silicon Deep can be found on the main Hector’s World® website at http://www.hectorsworld.com

A separate website containing information for teachers, parents and caregivers is located at http://hectorsworld.netsafe.org.nz/  and there is an ad-free brand channel on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/user/HectorsWorldNZ .  The goal of this channel is to connect with older siblings, parents and teachers and get them interested in using Hector’s World with young children.  The content is specifically geared to those who may be charged with the care of a younger child, not to young children themselves.

HWL also has a blog which can be found at http://hectorsworldltd.blogspot.com/

Hector’s World® Animation

The key to the success of Hector’s World® is the very engaging characters, and character-driven storylines. Young children engage with the material emotionally as well as intellectually. They can use the characters as role models until they are old enough to develop their own critical thinking and online skills.

Great creative giants like Walt Disney understood the communication power of animation with children. HWL is using that strategy to give children the best possible start to their life with ICT (information and communication technologies). We help them mature into caring, capable and responsible members of the online community.
As well, we are offering an effective tool to parents, teachers, librarians and others to build children’s understanding of digital citizenship.
Hector’s World® in New Zealand
Hector's World continues to grow into a comprehensive digital citizenship resource for the very young.  In New Zealand, the Hector's World resources are integrated into classroom learning programmes at many primary schools and early childhood centres.  Outside of New Zealand, UK and Australian educators can now maximise this free online resource with the aid of our Government Partners in the UK and Australia.
Hector’s World® in Australia

Hector’s World® is the Australian Communications and Media Authority’s key online safety resource for young children. It was launched on their website www.cybersmart.gov.au in July 2009, and is part of a suite of cybersafety resources available to teachers for use in the classroom.

Hector’s World® in the UK

Hector’s World® is in widespread use across UK primary schools through partner The Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre. Hector’s World® is CEOP’s key resource for 5-7 year olds. The CEOP Centre uses a multi-pronged approach to tackle the sexual abuse of children online which includes gathering and sharing intelligence, executing operations, and harm reduction through their Thinkuknow education programme. (http://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/).
