Perceptions and Tendencies of the Turkish Families Regarding Internet

On the occasion of the "Safer Internet Day", Perceptions and Tendencies of the Turkish Families Regarding Internet are analysed by an online research which is applied to 10,992 parents who have children using internet between the age range of 6-17 and 2.816 children between the age range of 12-17.

The most interesting result of the research is that 90 percent of Turkish families think that their children are at risk on the Internet.

Most of the parents are anxious that their children may be exposed to "obscene" and "violent" content or may access to such web sites while using the internet, their children may become dependant on internet or mobile phones, their personal and private information may be stolen by foreigners, their children may be subject to abuse and harassment over the internet and they may meet and become friend with ill-mentioned people.

Research gives important information on where children between the age range of 6-17 connect to the internet. According to results, 51.6 percent of children connect to the internet from a separate room. As the age increases, they prefer to use the internet at an independent section and begin to spend more time on the internet. Families say that their children prefer to connect the internet instead of spending time together with their families, reading books and playing outside with their friends. This situation reveals the fact that children feels confused between "virtual environment" and "reality".

While the average internet usage is up to 80 minutes per day at early ages, it increases over 2 hours from 15 years of age upward. Older age groups spend their time on the internet by socialising with online friends, watching movies and listening to music. On the other hand, smaller ones are playing games on the internet.

In general, children share their experiences with their parents when they are confronted with harmful content, but the demand for help reduces significantly when age progresses.

The parents often follow their children while using the internet. Although the most common method is to talk to them, methods such as sitting next to the children or secretly observing them are preferred especially in younger age groups. To follow the children becomes difficult when age progresses.

In general, various restrictions and bans about the use of internet are applied to the children. Softwares that prevent entering web sites with malicious content are generally being used.

More than half of the parents believe that playing games on the internet have a positive effect on their children. But this perception declines when the ages of the children and the time they spend on the internet increase.

Most of the parents say that they will complain when they encounter web sites with harmful content. The best known body is the Internet Hotline of ICTA (www.ihbarweb.org.tr) in this respect.

While small children receive the most basic information about internet usage from their families; friends and internet sites become important when age progresses.

More than half of the parents think that they have not enough information about safer internet.

Safer Internet Day Celebrations of Turkey

Turkey has celebrated its 1st Safer Internet Day with various events: On 23rd of February, a conference with the theme of "Internet: mishievous member of our family" was organized. Researchers, industry, NGOs and media representatives came together to discuss the matters related with the safer use of Internet. Furthermore, INSAFE Coordinator Janice Richardson and Head of ICT Applications and Cybersecurity Division of ITU-BDT made keynote speeches on their "Safer Internet" and "Child Online Protection" Programmes. The Saferkid website, www.guvenlicocuk.org.tr, has been opened officially at the beginning of the event by Undersecretary of Communications Ministry and a small girl aged 8. The results of research, especially prepared for SID on perceptions and tendencies of Turkish families, were declared at the main panel of the conference by an expert from Telecommunications Presidency which is responsible for Internet Content Regulations in Turkey. A newly prepared booklet containing advices for the parents has been disseminated firstly in the foregoing event. Finally, a short clip showing the importance of safer Internet use from the eyes of a small boy, has been released at the events.

The Safer Internet Day celebrated nationwide

With Safer Internet Day, celebrated this year on the 9th of February, more schools from the country carried out actions regarding the safety on the Internet.

On the 8th of February 2010, the XI class volunteers of the “Grigore Moisil” Informatics High School from Iasi, have presented to their younger colleges from the V-VIII classes, the Sigur.info program, and also the meaning of the Safer Internet Day. The action, coordinated by Positive Media, had the purpose of informing both teachers and children about the dangers that can occur when using the Internet and the new online and mobile technologies. The volunteers have given flyers, have presented materials and short movies (videos) about the safety on the Internet and discussed about the Sigur.info forum and blog, and also about the Saferpedia.eu on-line encyclopedia. Within this event, on the 9th of February 2010, the Sigur.info program has been presented to children from 5 classes from the AfterSchool EuroPrecepta Iasi, through powerpoint presentations, educational guides and open discussions with the involved volunteers.

In Cluj, the International School, winner of the first price in the “Secondary Schools” section of the Gala Award in Education, 2009 edition, has developed a special program meant to celebrate the Safety Internet Day. Thus, the children, coordinated by the teacher Istrate Ibolya-Ana, will see the “How much are you willing to risk” clip, will present powerpoint papers and materials, and also posters, all with “Our safety on the Internet” theme.

Saferpedia.eu has been launched – the first on-line encyclopedia regarding the safety on the Internet

The Sigur.Info Consortium has launched on the 9th of February 2010, with the celebration of the Safer Internet Day, the on-line encyclopedia, Saferpedia. The event took place at the Bucharest Radisson Hotel within the press conference. With this occasion the winners of the national contest “Think before u post!” were awarded.

Saferpedia.eu is intended to be a useful tool to those who want to be informed about various terms of the safety on the Internet, the use of computer or the mobile technologies. The encyclopedia, developed by Positive Media within the Sigur.Info project, is currently accessible in Romanian, and will be developed under the Saferpedia.eu domain in many other languages (English, French, German).

The Saferpedia on-line encyclopedia currently contains approximately 400 terms, divided into 10 distinctive categories, the number of definitions and informational resources related with these, increasing steadily. The terms are being defined so that they can be easily understood by children and teens, but also by teachers and parents.

Saferpedia.eu complements the Sigur.info portal, forum and blog, through many resources and definitions from the on-line domain that are being provided. The content editing will be made by both the publisher and the volunteer editors that can propose new terms or additions to the existing ones. The Saferpedia.eu project is developed on the MediaWiki platform, well known through the success of the Wikipedia.org virtual encyclopedia.

Family Online Safety Contest "My Safe Web" Winners Awarded

On Safer Internet Day the winners of the Second Family Online Safety Contest “Moya Bezopasnaya Set” (My Safe Web) were awarded at special ceremony.

The Contest was launched on December 1, 2009, and works were accepted till February 1, 2010. It was organized by Safer Internet Centre – Russia and Russian State Children’s Library. The original idea of the Contest was to promote communication and co-operation between parents and children on the issues of online safety, so families and child groups, not individual children, were participating in the Contest.

The Contest was supported by Kaspersky Lab, SkyLink mobile operator, Alpina Publishers, who provided prizes for winners. Patronage to the Contest was from Public Chamber of Russian Federation and from Children’s Ombudsman in Russia.

There were three nominations in the Contest. One was about amateur video clips about online safety. The other one was a contest of posters about online safety, and the third was the contest of stories. Children sent detective stories, fantastic stories, verses. Also Family Online Safety Agreements were accepted.

Total 1022 works were received, including 58 videoclips, 487 posters, 392 stories and 85 Family Agreements. The works came not only from the big cities but also from small and distant villages.

Three works in each nomination were awarded. Also some participants received special prizes from Russian State Children’s Libraries. The awarding ceremony was lead by Vice-Chairman of State Duma Committee on the matters of Women, Families and Children Alexander Bednov. After that the winners had an opportunity to get atop Ostankino TV Tower, not long ago the highest tower in the world.

Safe Runet Week (Nedelya Bezopasnogo Runeta) – a group of public events which are dealing with the issues of promoting safer use of the Internet among children and parents. Safe Runet Week – 2010 lasted from February 2, 2010 till February 9, 2010 and included events in Moscow and in other regions of Russia.

Safe Runet Week is devoted to Safer Internet Day and is the Russian contribution in Safer Internet Day activities. This year Safe Runet Week was held for the third time. Besides Moscow, 35 regions of Russian Federation (37 cities) took part in Safe Runet Week - 2010 (in 2009 – four regions).

Safe Runet Week in Moscow

From February 2 till February 9, 2010 Safe Runet Week (Nedelya Bezopasnogo Runeta) was held in Russia. Safe Runet Week is a group of public events dealing with the issues of promoting safer use of the Internet among children and parents.

Safe Runet Week is devoted to Safer Internet Day and is the Russian contribution in Safer Internet Day activities. This year Safe Runet Week will be held for the third time – the first Week was held in 2008. The events of the Week were held in Moscow and in 37 other cities from 35 regions of Russian Federation.

Safe Runet Week all over Russia included conferences, roundtables, Safer Internet contests, quizzes, exhibitions, expert communications. They were organized by NGOs, libraries, Internet-industry organizations with active participation of local government and law enforcement representatives.

The main events of Safe Runet Week were held in Moscow. Here is the list of Moscow events for Safe Runet Week-2010:

February 2. High Level Roundtable and Seminar “Child Safety on the Internet: Modern Approach in Russia and Europe”.

February 4 – Public Summit “Threats for Children, Users and Society from the Internet: situation in Russia”

Public Summit was based on i-SAFETY conference and is a new format of work on the problems dealing with safer use of the Internet. Public Summit gathered government officials, civil society specialists and Internet-industry representatives on several important issues in one discussion place. Its result was issuing recommendations for practical implementation.

Public Summit took place in Public Chamber of Russian Federation (Miusskaya ploschad, 7, Moscow). Summit program and list of participants is available at this website.

The documentary film “THE NET” broadcasting and advertisement campaign

Bullying on the Internet, children sexual abusing, addiction to computer and digital games, web sites or social networks – the main subjects of the documentary „THE NET“. Famous people, psychologists, pedagogues, representatives from governmental, business, international organizations in the documentary talk about their experiences, advantages and disadvantages of the Internet, advise parents what they should pay attention to. Heroes of the documentary – children, teenagers, parents living around us – tell their stories and share their thoughts what the INTERNET means to them.

The documentary promotion campaign:

the documentary “THE NET” will be broadcasted on 9 February, 17:15 pm on Lithuanian National Television (LTV1). It is important, that the documentary will be broadcasted before one of the highest rated news show “TODAY“;
Lithuanian telecommunications company TEO will continue broadcasting of the documentary from the 12^th of February;
the documentary is released in DVD format 3000 pcs. only. Each Lithuanian school (1500 schools) after the documentary premiere (9 February) will receive 1 DVD. The documentary DVD also will be distributed to other persons and organizations, related with Educational system of the Republic of Lithuania. (Educational centers , municipalities and so on);
after broadcasting the documentary on Lithuanian National Television on the website www.one.lt will be created the portal for this documentary – it will be able to watch and download the documentary. Later statistics will be collected: how many people downloaded and watched the documentary;
the documentary also will be available on the website www.zebra.lt

09 02 2010 conference in Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania “Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania opens the door to international Safer Internet Day”

With this event we hope to address Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania, public institutions and all public attention to protect children from danger in cyberspace and real world, illegal and harmful information related to such violations provided by law as pornography, pedophilia, racism, xenophobia. We hope that children will spread received information to their friends and thus will extend the circle of people who want to work on the Internet safely.

The planned number of participants – around 300.

Various games and quizzes for children about safer Internet as well as many other activities to raise public awareness about the Internet and dangers on the Internet will be organized during the conference. In conference the winners of contest “ Safer Internet Day in my school” will be awarded.

Safer Internet academy on wheels “TEOBUS”

While all the World celebrates Safer Internet Day, Safer Internet academy on wheels for the second year invites pupils and their parents to the lessons. From 23^rd of February TEOBUS academy on wheels will visit 12 Lithuanian cities and towns. Lecturer of the academy will advise how to use the Internet safely and how to avoid possible threats: viruses, hacking or virtual harassment.

While TEOBUS 4 lessons (45 min.) per day will be held;

Contest “Safer Internet Day in my school”

In January Lithuanian schools were invited to take a part in the contest “Safer Internet Day in my school”. This contest aims to prepare for the events for Safer Internet Day, which will be celebrated on 9^th of February 2010. The main idea is encourage teachers and pupils to pay more attention to the dangers on the Internet and to understand that the Safer Internet topic should be relevant to all of us.

The participants of the contest will organize “Safer Internet Day” in their schools and will send the descriptions, pictures, created video material to the organizers of the contest.

Coordinators and participants of the most inventive, original and creative organized events will be invited and officially awarded in the conference “Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania opens the door to International Safer Internet Day” which will be held on 9^th of February in the Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania.

The contest attracted a very high activity – currently 59 events descriptions are received.

Reflections on the contributions of Young people to the Internet

Today as we mark the Safer Internet Day 2010, we are invited to reflect on the important role that the global community of children and young people have in the Internet, as they truly represent the spirit of youthfulness, energy, dynamism and has made them the prime movers of the evolving Internet spaces such as the social networks that flourish and expand due to their presence and participation. It is truly amazing to see myriad of innovative creations contributed by youth and children on the Internet, from hilarious interpretation to serious exploration of contemporary themes made through innovative videos, art work, literature, music and other expressive forms A cursory look at some of these creations exemplify the vast amount of talent these young people have and their incredible capacity to bring a fresh and unique view and their interpretation of issues when provided with channels for participation , expression of creativity and innovation.

While we recognize and celebrate the evolution of the medium (the Internet and the online spaces) and those who are linked with these developments, today we note the role of children as key participants in this space and contributors to this evolution. The development of what is termed as Web 2.0, has resulted from the energetic adaptation and experimentation from the users and the impact it has created in all significant areas of our life. Children and young people have been instrumental in bringing this space to new heights. The “Global village “ is now truly global with a child from a distant part of Latin America or Africa communicating with ease and comfort with their counterpart from the distant regions of Asia or Europe without concerns for bridging the cultural differences that may otherwise exist. Children and young people have quickly recognized the reach of these mediums for learning, experimenting and creating friendship and it is imperative to ensure that these online spaces are safe and secure for them. As young people increase their active use and participation in this realm it is all the more compelling to have safety and security enforced to ensure a positive experience for them in this space.

While identifying measures and strategies for their online protection, active participation and inputs from young people is very essential. They are key users and contributors for this medium and their role should be treated not only as recipient of advice from adults on Internet Safety , but also as advisors on the measures needed to be put in place by duty bearers. This will ensure protection of their right to safe participation online.

Looking at the emerging threats in cyberspace and the enjoyment of our generation embracing the internet applications, Outreach Department of CyberSecurity Malaysia has organised three main activities 1) Orange Freeze 2) CyberSAFE for Youth Seminar 3) Digital Contents Competition. These activities have twofold objectives 1) to increase security awareness and 2) to understand them better.

With these approaches, we improve our awareness programs, understand their cyberspace's culture and behaviour and of course very good rapport with them to communication with us.

Through our CyberSAFE Ambassador Program, we have learned so much about them. Of course we have study case throughout the world but we learn so many stuffs from them with regards to local perspective - what happening in Malaysia.

Safe Internet is one of ISOC's priority missions. In the past 4 years, ISOC Belgium has focused on this topic by implement an Internet ombudsman project which permits Internet users in Belgium to address their complaints. Participation in several international events, conferences and discussions ISOC Belgium gathered a lot of experience in trying to understand the initial question : how can we protect us against Internet crime ?

Our Activities For Safer Internet Day 2010

The following activities are being held :

a) A half-day workshop on Social Networking Principles on the 9^th February 2010 at MGI targeting ICT primary school teachers. This workshop is a joint initiative of CERT-MU, National Computer Board (NCB), Ministry of Education, Culture and Human Resources and IT Security Unit, Ministry of Information and Communication Technology. The objective of this workshop is to sensitise the representatives of primary schools about the risks posed to children and young people, directly and indirectly, through the use of their images, particularly on the Internet and other electronic media and also on how the improper use of Internet technologies lead to cyberbullying and other adverse impacts on the youth.

b) Launching of pamphlets on Social Networking and Cyberbullying during the workshop.

c) Awareness sessions on Internet Safety for children of secondary schools organised jointly by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Human Resources, CERT-MU, NCB and IT Security Unit, Ministry of Information and Communication Technology and the PSSA during the months of February and March 2010.

d) Awareness sessions on Internet Safety for parents and young people through the NCB Cyber caravans during the month of February 2010.

e) Dissemination of brochures on Internet Safety for Children in schools and in community centres.

f) A video clip on dangers of Social Networking websites for children to be produced by CERT-MU, NCB in collaboration with the Mauritius College of the Air (MCA). The clip would be broadcasted on MBC TV.

g) Workshop on code of conduct for Internet Usage in schools. This workshop is a joint-collaboration between the Ministry of Education, Culture and Human Resources and IT Security Unit of the Ministry of Information Communication Technology, and is targeted towards fee paying schools.

h) A Conference on Online Counseling for Children on the 3^rd February 2010, organised by the Internet Child Safety Foundation (ICSF).

i) A website (http://www.ncb.mu/sid) on safety tips for parents and children with regards to social networking sites and cyberbullying.

Alþjóðlegi netöryggisdagurinn verður haldinn hátíðlegur í sjöunda sinn þann 9. febrúar næstkomandi. Þemað í ár er „Hugsaðu áður en þú sendir!” og munu yfir 60 þjóðir um allan heim standa fyrir skipulagðri dagskrá þennan dag.

Með nýrri tækni erum við flest orðin að útgefendum upplýsinga, mynda og myndbanda. En hegðun okkar á netinu getur einnig gert okkur „heimsfræg” á stuttum tíma. Við getum tjáð okkur á netinu með auðveldum hætti en það getur einnig haft í för með sér vandræði. Sem dæmi má nefna að þegar mynd hefur verið sett á netið er nánast ógerlegt að eyða henni aftur og allir hafa aðgang að henni, jafnvel mörgum árum síðar. Þó settar séu að því er virðist saklausar partýmyndir á netið í dag getur tilvist þeirra þar haft neikvæðar afleiðingar í för með sér við atvinnuleit mörgum árum síðar. Því þarf að tryggja að börn, unglingar og fullorðnir búi yfir nægilegri þekkingu til að stjórna upplýsingagjöf sinni á ábyrgan hátt og virði um leið val annarra á hvað fer á netið og hvað ekki.

Netöryggismiðstöðvar 27 Evrópuþjóða, sem mynda Insafe netverkið (www.saferinternet.org), og nærri 40 önnur lönd munu þennan dag leiða saman ungt fólk og fullorðna til þess að vekja athygli á og ræða mikilvægi þess að hugsa sig um áður en efni er sett á netið. Netverkið hefur látið framleiða stutta auglýsingu til þess að styðja við herferðina, en hún verður aðgengileg bæði á netinu (www.saft.is ) og sýnd í sjónvarpi næstu daga.

Í tilefni dagsins stendur SAFT fyrir málþingi í Skriðu, aðalbyggingu Menntavísindasviðs Háskóla Íslands v/Stakkahlíð, kl. 14.30-16.30. Fundarstjóri verður Páll Óskar Hjálmtýsson.

Safer Internet Day in Iceland

SID 2010 activities in Iceland include:

1. The SID spot will be aired on all 3 national TV stations in Iceland

2. A conference on “Think before you post” in collaboration with Microsoft Iceland, The Public Health Institute of Iceland, Nyherji, Vodafone and Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. See agenda: http://www.saft.is/frettir/frett/nr/116348/

3. Announce the winner of a national student competition on Peer2Peer educational material on safe and positive use of the internet

4. All 3 national TV stations and the major radio stations will cover SID 2010 in the news and talk shows

5. SID 2010 will be promoted in all major newspapers and local community papers across Iceland. It will also be promoted with web-banners, direct mailing through our network and with viral marketing via Facebook, Youtube etc.

6. In collaboration with Microsoft Iceland we will travel across Iceland with school conferences on “Think before you post”, inviting students, parents, teachers and the local community to participate

SID Events of Turkey

1. A National Conference on the main theme of “Internet: a mischievous member of our family”

The Conference is organized by the Internet Board which consist of public and private stakeholders. It will target families, NGOs, academicians and media. Main goal of the Conference is to create awareness among the people and to attract the attention of all the related parties.

2. Official opening of the web site “guvenlicocuk.org.tr”, our saferkid project, at the Conference.

3. Discussion of the results of a research on the “Perceptions and Tendencies of the Families Regarding Internet” at the Conference.

4. Introduction of “Parental Guide for the Safer Use of Internet” at the Conference.

5. Making a short film with awareness theme to broadcast on TV channels.

Think B4 U Post - some tips

Anything anyone posts online remains there for an indefinite period and accessible for everyone.
This can have serious consequences.

Children and teenagers need to be made aware that they can control their online identity. Here are some tips (this list is of course not exhaustive):

- use the privacy settings offered by social networking services
- Don't share your username or password
- select friends online that you can trust
- publish your own photos after thinking carefully about the potential consequences
- Ask yourself if you would be embarrassed if your friends or family saw the pictures or video you post online. If the answer is yes, then you should stop.
- don't publish pictures of your friends without their permission
- Keep your personal data private
- Be careful about posting identity-revealing or sexually provocative photos.

Safer Internet Day celebration in Luxembourg

This year‘s SID will be dedicated to the launch of the new web portal. A communication campaign involving posters in public transports, web teasers and banners announces the launch and invites people to visit the new portal.

This campaign is topped up on SID with a double-deck bus and a promotional van which will park on several public places and inform the population about SID, the LuSI project and the new portal.

Other national events are also foreseen:

- The LuSI youth panel organises a lotery with fortune-cookie like tickets holding Internet Safety slogans written by the panelists, as well as cinema tickets.

- The Lycée Athénée will organise workshops dealing with cyber-addiction

- The Lycée Michel Rodange will show internet safety videos in the school screens throughout the day

- InternetMonitor.lu will launch two Knlos (knowlege bases) about cyberbullying and ethical use of ICT.
